FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Dogmouth is an online literary agency dedicated to accompanying unpublished writers, and those who have encountered difficulties in gaining access to a publisher. Our mission is to offer professional representation and to open doors in an ever more crowded marketplace, without imposing publication costs upon the author.

✅ Submitting your manuscript and contacting us is always free of charge. We do not demand advances, nor do we work under co-publishing schemes: publication costs are borne entirely by the publishing house or production company that ultimately acquires your work.

Our commitment is to evaluate your manuscript by professional standards, to offer you a realistic strategic plan, and to represent you before editors and producers. Unlike the so-called vanity presses, which exact payment in advance without a genuine editorial filter, Dogmouth invariably places the author’s talent and the quality of the work at the forefront.

✅ We charge solely a percentage upon the actual income you receive (royalties or exploitation rights). Never beforehand. Our commissions are lower than the customary rates in the sector (15% as against the standard 25%), for we believe in a fair and transparent relationship with the author.

✅ We do not charge for publishing your work, but we do provide optional reports and services of literary and strategic analysis for those who wish to refine their manuscript before presenting it to publishers.

  • These are useful instruments, but never a condition for representation.

✅ We accept unpublished works from any writer who seeks serious representation and publication without incurring printing or co-edition costs. The sole requirement is compliance with our quality standards, as set forth in the Send your Work section of our website.

✅ Quite simple: kindly review the Bring Us Your Work section carefully and ensure that you meet the formats and conditions indicated. Click on the link "click here to complete the Data Sheet and the Consent Form". Once data for the Data Sheet with your personal and your work's information has been introduced, accept the Conditions, press "Enter" and the information shall reach us instantly.

✅ You shall receive an automatic acknowledgement the very instant your manuscript enters our servers and, at the most, a literary agent will reach you before 48 hours via e-mail.

  • After reading of the manuscript, the preliminary assessment is generally issued within three to six weeks. We prefer to respond with substance, even should that entail a few additional days’ waiting.

✅ Not at all. We represent authors from across the globe who write in either English or Spanish.

  • Our network includes more than two thousand international publishers which visit us periodically on the Global Editors Hub, principally in Hispanic and Anglophone markets.

  • Moreover, our polyglot team commands Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian and German. Should your manuscript be in one of these languages, kindly contact us beforehand so that we may evaluate its feasibility.

✅ We represent manuscripts in Spanish and English with international reach.

  • Furthermore, thanks to publishers and producers worldwide entering the Global Editors Hub to view reports on your manuscript being thus our network of contacts almost unlimited, we may on occasion consider projects in other languages.

  • Our objective is always to maximise the opportunities for placement of your work.

✅ The duration invariably depends upon the commercial viability of the work and upon the conditions imposed by the publisher or producer concerned. Without the assistance of an agent, two or even three years may easily elapse between the moment an author first attracts attention and the eventual publication of the work, following the traditional course of approaching editors and producers by correspondence or unsolicited telephone calls.

  • With the guidance of an agent and the invaluable support of the Global Editors Hub, the entire landscape of publication is transformed. The speed of placement depends in large measure upon the reports we prepare for editors and producers. These reports dissect and synthesise your manuscript, transforming it into clear, objective, and digestible information. We perform the work which editors and producers cannot undertake for want of time and resources, thereby enabling them to decide with greater agility.

  • Thus, once a work is accepted, the process accelerates notably: the exhaustive analysis has already been accomplished by Dogmouth. In practice, this results in a very considerable reduction of the customary time to publication, whether in print or in audiovisual media.

✅ Indeed. We represent your work in all forms of exploitation: printed, digital, and audiovisual. We seek and find through the Global Editors Hub publishing houses, production companies, and platforms interested in adaptations for cinema, television, series, theatre, or audiobooks.

✅ Your work may appear in both physical and electronic form. We collaborate with publishers who ensure international distribution in bookshops and presence on the principal digital platforms.

✅ Yes. In addition to representing authors, we act as scouts for publishers and producers, identifying talent and works of promise.

  • This dual role places us in a privileged position to connect each author with the right opportunity through the Global Editors Hub.

✅ No. Simultaneously with the submission of your manuscript, from the page “Send Us Your Work” you will be redirected to a form entitled Data Sheet. In this form, you will be asked, on the one hand, to provide a series of personal details and information relating to your work which are essential in order to grant you free visibility within the Global Editors Hub. On the other hand, you will be required to give your express consent by successively accepting nine clearly formulated clauses.

  • These consents take the place of exclusivity agreements or general contracts which, in many cases, tend to place the author at a disadvantage. Their purpose is to ensure an active, genuine, and continuous presence of your work within the professional repository, without any assignment of rights and without any contractual obligation whatsoever. They also expressly confirm that the work may be withdrawn from the Global Editors Hub at the author’s discretion, once an editorial or production agreement has been concluded through channels external to the repository itself and sufficient proof has been submitted.

  • The consents cover, among other matters, authorisation to publish identifying details of the author and the work in summarised form, confirmation of the ownership of rights, acknowledgement that the repository functions as a professional showcase, and acceptance of the processing of personal data in accordance with the applicable data protection legislation.

  • Only in the event that a genuine and verifiable professional interest arises through the Global Editors Hub, and it becomes necessary to negotiate specific terms on your behalf, will we then propose the execution of a specific intermediary agreement. Such an agreement shall be strictly limited to the active negotiation with that particular professional and shall not, under any circumstances, entail a general or permanent commitment to Dogmouth Literary Agency, save within the scope expressly defined by that contract.

✅ You may request the removal of your Author Profile from the Global Editors Hub in accordance with the conditions set out in the Data Sheet form, in which you previously accepted the general terms governing the promotion of your work within the showcase repository.

  • In all circumstances, the intellectual property of your work remains exclusively yours throughout the entire process; at no point is it relinquished or transferred.

  • This commitment to transparency likewise encompasses the author’s right to terminate the relationship unilaterally and at any time, provided that such termination is carried out in accordance with the obligations previously undertaken and expressly consented to in the Data Sheet & Consent at the time of its acceptance.

✅ No. It is not necessary to work on an exclusive basis with Dogmouth during the initial phase.

  • Once the conditions set out in the Data Sheet have been accepted, and the form has been completed and validated entirely online, the work is displayed within the Global Editors Hub at no cost to the author. This presence is maintained on an uninterrupted basis until either party, the author or the agency, decides to proceed with its withdrawal, without any penalty or contractual obligation arising therefrom.

  • However, when an editor, producer, or other industry professional expresses a specific interest in the manuscript and, with the author’s prior consent, the agency submits the work for consideration, the situation changes in qualitative terms. At the point at which such a professional demonstrates a genuine intention to edit or publish the work, Dogmouth Literary Agency will propose that the author enter into an intermediary agreement, solely for the purpose of ensuring that the negotiations are conducted in an orderly, effective, and mutually satisfactory manner.

  • It is at this stage of active negotiation that exclusivity comes into effect, as is customary and reasonable in any literary intermediary arrangement. Such exclusivity is neither general nor indefinite in nature, but is strictly limited to the specific negotiation process with the interested professional.

  • In any event, the author may proceed with confidence. The legal terms of the agreement are flexible and are provided with sufficient advance notice to allow for careful review. The author may propose adjustments to various provisions and, in particular, may limit the exclusivity to the period strictly necessary for the conduct of the negotiations, up to the eventual execution of the definitive contract between the author and the editor or producer.

✅ Yes. The submission of your manuscript does not entail any assignment of rights. Your work remains yours at all times.

  • Any collaboration with Dogmouth is formalised by means of a representation agreement, specifically designed to safeguard your intellectual property at every stage of direct negotiation with editors or producers, once they have requested your manuscript and have expressed a genuine interest in the editing and publication of your work.

✅ It signifies that we manage the entire process: from the initial reception of the manuscript, through its analysis in 26 reports, to the negotiation of contracts with national and international publishers, to the management of distribution in bookshops and digital platforms, and finally to the years in which you shall be receiving your royalties.

  • Dogmouth attends to it all.

✅ Because a single glance is never sufficient. A literary work is a living organism: it holds voice, rhythm, structure, emotion, projection—and hidden risks. The twenty-six reports are no mere papers but a raised map revealing each layer. Each sheds light upon a distinct angle: what an editor perceives on the first page, what a reader feels upon the last, what the market expects, what the law permits, what strategy advises.

  • To send a work without such a map is to proceed in darkness, trusting to fortune or to the indulgence of a stranger. Thus do most authors stumble unseen, blind to the true weight and reach of their manuscripts. With the reports, your work ceases to be an enigma and becomes a considered project, its strengths and frailties already exposed. Such clarity not only guides you; it compels an editor to take you seriously from the first encounter.

  • Your manuscript record in the Global Editors Hub includes these twenty-six reports—but not the manuscript itself. Editors and producers have no time to read thousands of complete works, yet they can review, in minutes, the concise, essential reports prepared by Dogmouth with professional discernment. When we capture their attention through this clarity, the desired chain of events begins: they request the manuscript—and we send it with delight.

  • That is why there is no short cut: twenty-six interlocking pieces, like the cogs of a fine mechanism. Without them, success depends upon chance; with them, chance itself becomes strategy.

✅ We do not confine ourselves to any one genre. What matters is literary quality and market potential. We accept all genres, including comics and other visual or audiovisual materials. We also welcome, with particular interest, original and unpublished scripts for cinema, television, or series, given the strong demand amongst our associated editors and producers, who are regular visitors to the Global Editors Hub.

✅ Yes.

  • We do not accept manuscripts already published without withdrawal from circulation,

  • texts involving plagiarism or infringing the rights of third parties.

  • Nor do we represent works generated entirely by artificial intelligence without genuine authorial contribution.

    • We wish to guarantee quality, originality, and viability.

✅ Yes. At Dogmouth, we hold transparency to be essential. From the receipt of your work to the final negotiations with publishers or producers, you shall be kept informed at every stage.

  • You will receive both automatic updates and personalised reports, enabling you to comprehend how your manuscript is being evaluated and prepared for the market.

  • The detail of the reports and assessments may be found in the section: How is my work documented during evaluation? (See FAQ below).

✅ At Dogmouth, your manuscript is handled within a framework of strict confidentiality and full legal protection. All information received, including original texts and the author’s personal data, is processed in accordance with internal protocols specifically designed to ensure its safekeeping, integrity, and exclusively professional use. Rigorous compliance with the applicable data protection regulations, in particular the GDPR, constitutes a fundamental pillar of our operations.

  • Under no circumstances are manuscripts exposed to external platforms, open repositories, or unauthorised third parties lacking express and duly justified authorisation.

  • This confidentiality policy likewise extends to the manner in which works are presented to editors and producers through the Global Editors Hub. Within this professional environment, the work is never displayed in its entirety, but rather through synthesised information derived from evaluation reports, thereby preventing any improper use of the original text. Access is strictly limited to accredited industry professionals and is subject to access controls and traceability mechanisms.

  • In this way, the author retains full ownership and control of the work at all times, with the assurance that the manuscript circulates solely within professional, secure contexts fully aligned with the principles of confidentiality, transparency, and respect for authors’ rights that govern Dogmouth’s practice.

✅ Your manuscript is analysed through several successive phases of reading:

  • Twenty-six comprehensive reports are prepared by different pilot and validation readers.

  • An internal system then consolidates these assessments into an Editorial Development Report.

  • The management of Dogmouth receives a final Integrated Editorial Evaluation Report, in which all aspects of the work are assessed in an objective and detailed manner.

  • These are the reports that we make available to our associated editors by uploading them to the showcase of the Global Editors Hub, and upon which, whether they choose to place their trust in us or not, they will base their decision either to sit down and read the manuscript entrusted to us by the author, or to decline it. Without these reports, in ninety-nine per cent of cases, editors simply do not read manuscripts.

  • Within the “Author's Card” section of the Global Editors Hub—an area restricted exclusively to the author, who will previously have been provided with a personal username and access password—you will have access to a panel featuring detailed counters, including the number of visits to the work’s profile by editors and producers and the number of reports requested by each professional, among other relevant, dynamic, and real-time data. These records constitute a valuable tool for the author to assess and monitor the evolution of editorial interest generated by the work. At each stage, automated electronic notifications will inform you whenever there are developments in visits to your Author Profile by literary professionals interested in your work.

  • The Editor Statuses represent the different phases through which an Author Profile progresses: from its initial exposure, through the viewing and/or downloading of all or some of the twenty-six reports by an interested editor or producer, followed by the request for the manuscript, and so on, until the life cycle of the work is completed, culminating in conclusion of a publishing agreement and its eventual publication in international markets.
